iPhone 5 to be another Google killer — but with a twist

A couple of years ago Steve Jobs called a Town Hall meeting at Apple and rallied the troops by saying the next iPhone, which was to be the iPhone 4, would be an A+ update and take it to the turncoat Google and their Android operating system. According to our sources, a similar sentiment is being expressed by Apple in Cupertino again this year, but with a decidedly different twist. Instead of just hitting Google and Android in the market place with better hardware and software, and in the courts with patent litigation, they’re going to hit them where it really hurts.

More daily Facebook users on Android than iPhone

Facebook for Android update, with Timeline

By Athima Chansanchai

Even though Facebook for Android came out later than Facebook for Apple, the Android app ? like the mobile OS itself?? has taken the lead over its iPhone/iPad counterpart.

AppData?documented the rise in Facebook for Android’s daily users, which culminated in this week’s technical knockout with 58.8 million daily active users, vs. Facebook for iPhone’s 57.6 million. (These are, by the way, the official mobile apps made by Facebook, not third-party ones.)

Of course, considering the increasing ubiquity of Android devices and downloads, it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock to anyone that it’s on top, especially since it’s a free download.

It was never a question of if? Facebook for Android would gain more users, but rather, when it would surpass the iPhone Facebook users. Just this past week, it added 1.3 million users. Consider that about a month ago, on Nov. 19, Facebook for Android had a little over 53 million daily active users.?

In contrast, Facebook for iPhone added only 300,000 daily active users in the past week, and during the same month duration only gained 2.5 million daily active users.

On a monthly active user basis, Facebook for iPhone is still ahead, with 99.5 million vs. Facebook for Android’s 86.1 million. But again, Android picked up 1.6 million monthly active users in the past 7 days, showing a faster rate of additions than Facebook for iPhone, which only gained 500,000 monthly active users in the same time period.

The latest update to the app, released on Android Market Dec. 15, aligns it with the Timeline changes on Facebook, which is also reflected in the most recent Facebook for iPhone update. Other improvements include: one-press navigation to groups, apps, pages and settings; zoom on friends’ photo tags; and faster notifications.

In a?recent Nielsen report, Facebook is second only to the Android Market as the most used app on Androids.

New Facebook For iPhone 4.1 Includes Timeline Access and Faster Photos

Facebook for iphone 4.1Facebook has just pushed out version 4.1 of its popular iPhone app. The update includes the ability to view the new profile Timeline, ?Subscribers, Subscriptions, pop-over notifications, and add people to friend lists. The app feels more responsive, and photos seem to load significantly faster. Facebook launched Timeline globally a few days ago, but initially it could only be accessed from m.facebook.com and Facebook for Android. The update will give plenty of exposure to Timeline, as Facebook for iPhone has 99.5 million monthly active users and 57.6 million daily active users, according to AppData.

Google prepping Siri competitor, codenamed ‘Majel’: rumor (Digital Trends)

majel-googleGoogle engineers are reportedly working furiously to create their answer to Apple?s Siri voice assistant, which serves as one of the few primary selling points of the iPhone 4S. The details come via Android and Me, and remain unconfirmed from Google.

According to the report, the project is codenamed Majel, after the voice of the Federation Computer in Star Trek, late actress Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who was also the wife of the show?s creator, Gene Roddenberry. (Yes, Google engineers are that geeky.)

The artificial intelligence software is the next evolution of Google?s Voice Actions feature in Android. Like Siri, Majel will allow users to perform functions on their mobile device using natural language. Majel will allegedly be one of the first major projects to come out of Google X, the Mountain View, Califorina-company?s ?secret? development sector, which works on ambitious, often covert, projects, like Google?s self-driving cars.

As anyone with an iPhone 4S knows, Siri is both amazing and idiotic, all at the same time. Sometimes, it understands you perfectly; other times, it fails to grasp even the most basic of tasks. Of course, Apple insists that Siri is a work in progress, and will get better over time. It will be interesting to see whether Majel can leapfrog Siri in the performance department from the get-go.

Majel will reportedly be released by the end of this year, which is only a few weeks away.
